在日常會話中恰到好處地使用習慣用語能讓你的語言別有風味。我們今天要學的習慣用語都包括“nail”這個詞。它作名詞時的意思是“釘子”，作動詞時意為“用釘子釘”。
1. nail down
從字面上看，nail down意思是“釘下去”或者“釘牢”。如果把什么東西往下釘在地板上的話，那它的位置就固定不變，成了定局，可以引申為“敲定”，例如：
I nailed down a contract to sell a thousand cars. The customer signed all the papers and I've already faxed them back to you。
我敲定了一個出售一千輛汽車的合約。那位顧客簽了所有的文件，我已經(jīng)把文件用傳真發(fā)回給你了。
2. as hard as nails
As hard as nails字面意思是“像釘子一樣硬”。如果一個人像釘子一樣硬的話，那人想必既頑固強硬又無情無義，是個相當難相處的人。例如：
They offered me a good job at that company but I hear that the boss is as hard as nails: one little mistake and you're out on the street the next day looking for a new job。
他們向我提供那家公司的一個很好的職位，但是我聽說他們的老板是個很難相處的人：只要你犯一個小錯，他馬上把你一腳踢出公司大門，讓你另謀生路。
3. another nail in your coffin
棺材在死者入殮后才用釘子釘上，所以棺材釘子是送人去地下長眠的。例如：
You really ought to stop smoking. Every cigarette you light up is another nail in your coffin。
你一定得戒煙，你每點上一枝香煙，就等于往墳墓跨近了一步。
這里的another nail in your coffin相當于中文的“催命符”，意思是有害健康、危及生命的東西。實際上人們給香煙起的綽號就是coffin nail。
4. hit the nail on the head
木工敲釘子得正敲在它扁平的頂上，才能釘?shù)们〉胶锰�。所以hit the nail on the head用來表示“說話行事恰到好處、正中要害或者十分中肯”。例如：
Your analysis really hit the nail on the head。
你的分析確實一針見血。
